Imedi TV questions ALDE over sanctions call linked to grant legislation

The presidents of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party and the European Liberal Forum have called on the European Union to take action against the Georgian authorities, including the imposition of sanctions, following the closure of German foundations' operations in Georgia.

The foundations ended their activities in the country after legislation regulating grants prohibited them from engaging in political activities.

Imedi TV asked ALDE whether its call for targeted sanctions in response to the enforcement of Georgian legislation disregards the country’s existing legal framework governing foreign grants and funding.

The broadcaster also questioned whether such a position suggests that non-governmental organisations and foundations are being used for political purposes.
